‘Reason’ or ‘belief’

It seems our dependence upon ‘reason’ or ‘belief’ is going to have to evolve…

In other words, do we want to evolve beyond primitive tribes, or not? By the looks of it, no matter what your capacity for reason or rationality, and no matter how unique or clever your beliefs may be, you have to learn new skills.

Basically, in this era, we have a very noble task which has probably never existed before. We want to permit each person the power of having an absolute relationship to the mystery of the universe. That’s basically what we call democracy. It’s the implicit component of our kind of freedom.

Integrating that kind of freedom with a system that previously was defined by austere rules is really quite a challenge, though, especially because no one has ever done it on the scale we are attempting.

We really need to cut ourselves some slack, and take a breath, and realize we may all be learning how to do this thing called civilization in a new way.

Can we balance chaos AND control (the unpredictable and the understandable), so as to maximize living with creativity and continuity and connectivity? This is a very unique challenge for the species, and we’ve really never done it before.
